MTNL greas up for 3G rollout

State owned MTNL which has to go through the bidding process(without backdoor entry) has finalized its 3G rollout plans. It has placed equipment and networking orders with ITI-Alcatel. In another development, the GSM lobby represented by COAI, has expressed it's unhappiness over 3G rollout recommendations of TRAI and in a release said,
"On the whole, the TRAI recommendations are rather slanted in favour of CDMA and disadvantageous to GSM".

3G Spectrum to be auctioned. Base collection at $1 Billion

The recommendations of TRAI for 3G services in India have been highlighted by goBroadband Analyst. With a base price of Rs1,000 crores for PAN-India 3G license, the government is likely to net around Rs1,500 crores in the auction process for an all India license per operator. Considering 5 such operators, the government coffers will be filled by $1.6 to $1.8 Billion after the auction process.

Additionally, the government has recommended Broadband Wireless Access policy[PDF] in the 3.3 GHz spectrum range and is much more exhaustive and well thought for the long term development and deployment of broadband services in India.

Ortel Cable to diversify into Telecom

Ortel Communications, with Cable TV service as its core business is now venturing into basic telephony services. Ortel also offers broadband internet services. Cable TV operators in India were a secured lot because of no competition and they ruled the space for over a decade with no innovation by just ripping of customers. Since last 2 years they are facing increasing competition from DTH providers like Tata Sky Dish TV , Zee Dish TV and others.

One of the first operators to wake up to competition is Ortel Communications Limited of Orissa. They have paid Rs5 crores license fees for basic telephony operations for the state or Orissa and will provide this as an value added service to its existing Cable TV subscribers. Phone calls between Ortel Customers will be free while to other networks like BSNL, the customer has to bear the charges of interconnect. This means that Ortel call rates are expected to be far lower than existing landline and fixed wireless phone service providers.

Bharti-Airtel the MNC Mobile Service Provider.

Just a week ago, fellow blogger at goBroadband, covering the "
Emergence of Asian Telecom giants
"series had left us guessing which of the Indian Telcos would join the rank and file of Multinational Telecom Companies. ET reports that Bharti TeleVentures has won the necessary approval to be a Mobile service provider in "Guernsey" located in the English Channel, northwest of France. Along with Jersey, it forms the collective grouping known as the Channel Islands.

Through this deal, the bottomline of Bharti Airtel is unlikely to be enriched as the total population of Guernsey is mere 66,000 and the area of Guernsey is just 78 Sq Km(20 times smaller than Bangalore) What is important is that Indian companies are going global in search of growth :-)

Excerpts from gobroadband,
"The edge Indian companies have over western telcos is the operational efficiency but severely lack in Research and Development of new technologies which may not be a critical/deciding factor".

MTNL WiMaxed

WiMax, the disruptive technology for wireless communications has bitten Indian telecom PSU, MTNL. MTNL which has the available spectrum isn't sitting quiet and has laid the roadmap for IP Mobile and IP Fixed phones to be deployed on WiMax. WiMax is an IP based wireless data application that enables high speed communication. In a typical deployment, WiMax can support users within a radius of 10Kms without line of sight from the equipment at data rates upto 40MPBs.

WiMax will be a killer application for broadband deployment in India and is the best way to go. I am not sure why MTNL is so short sighted that it doesn't want to provide TriBand internet over WiMax as it has directly jumped to IP absed phone services.

Flag Telecom Lanuches FALCON

Reliance Communications controlled, Flag Telecom today launched, Falcon. Falcon connects India, Middle East and Europe. It has an initial bandwidth capacity of 90GigaBits which can be scaled to 2.5 TeraBits. Falcon will be further connected to the Flag Global Network which would now become the largest undersea cable system in the world, as Falcon adds 11,589 kms to the existing network of 54,000 kms.

Reliance will very soon join the league of “Emerging Asian Telecom Giants” with global presence. Currently Reliance has significant interests in the lucrative Middle East market as it unveiled RiTV for them in June this year.

Cable TV operators also want 3G slice

The GSM lobby is busy bargaining for cheaper 3G entry. Reliance humiliated by step motherly treatment from Qualcomm has thrown bids and applied licenses for 3G GSM spectrum. Enter, Cable TV operators who also want to offer Mobile TV and Broadband in India over 3G networks.

Zee which currently offers Cable TV(Siticable) and Direct To Home (Dish TV India) is the first cable operator to bid for 3G spectrum. They are of the opinion that more cable operators will join the bidding soon. All this implies that the government will be forced to auction the precious spectrum :-)
