| Diwali Online Shopping expected to touch Rs250 crores |
|
Indian's are choosing to shop and send gifts online rather than driving on pot-holed roads in city full of pollution like Bangalore.
In a survey conducted by IAMAI, Indians are likely to shop goods worth Rs250 crores this Diwali. Last diwali(2005) the figure was Rs115 Crores an increase of 117% over 2004 when the figure was mere Rs53 crores.
Lack of credible online retaliers and brands contributed to the dismal performance of e-commerce experience in India. However, from 2007, the figure is expected to grow exponentially as the Indian economic boom continues. |

| Your VoIP call gets costlier. |
|
Government has set it's eyesight now on Online Indians. P.Chidambram wants to influence them by collecting 12% service tax on VoIP calls :-)
ET is reporting that, VoIP companies like Skype, Net2Phone, Yahoo, DialPad, MediaRing etc will be brought under the ambit of ISP license. This means your VoIP call to the US/UK has gotten costlier but this will help ISPs roll out their own VoIP packages as they had been demanding a level playing field for long time. The Government has further added that, it may monitor all this traffic under the National Security issue. |

| Motorola Inc moves to Delhi High Court |
|
My reliable sources tell that, American Telecom equipment manufacturer, Motorola Inc has moved to the Delhi High Court against BSNL's decision of disqualifying them from $4 Billion 3G GSM global tender. Earlier yesterday, BSNL director, Mr Dube disclosed that Motorola and ZTE were disqualified leaving Nokia, Ericsson and Siemens in the race.
If you can go back 12 years in Indian telecom history, Sunil Bharti Mittal had won all the four mobile licenses for metros, but then the Minister in-charge, late Shri. Rajesh Pilot didn't want Mittal to operate and disqualified him in 3 metros finally in the court of Justice, Mittal got Delhi circle. So not sure who has vested interest here against Motorola this time or it is also possible that Motorola could not have met the specifications stated by BSNL.

| Motorola and ZTE out of BSNL 3G Equipment Race |
|
"Motorola and ZTE both have been disqualified on the basis of failing to meet stringent technical norms specified by BSNL", said R L Dube, Director, Planning - BSNL India Limited.
Only three companies are in race now, Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson. However, after bidding for the mega $5 Billion 3G GSM tender, Nokia and Siemens have merged their global network operations into Nokia Siemens Networks. The tender rule stated that, 60% of the contract will goto the lowest bidder and the remaining 40% to the second lowest bidder. It would be interesting to see the BSNL decision, if either of Nokia or Siemens emerged as the lowest and the second lowest bidders. Historically, BSNL and other government owned agencies are not in favor of delegating the entire work to any single party. Keep your fingers crossed and more updates will follow soon.

| Global telcos waiting to start operations as MVNO |
|
Global Telecom majors like, Virgin Mobile's application to be a MVNO has been rejected twice on the grounds that their is insufficient infrastructure. The DOT is now planning to revisit its earlier decision. It will ask the TRAI to initiate a consultation paper on allowing MVNOs in India.
What is MVNO anyway ? MVNO is the acronym of Mobile Virtual Network Operator. Virgin Mobile operates as a MVNO in the United States. irgin doesn't have any telecom related infrastructure, and it will rely on some other operator for the same. MVNOs will concentrate on Advertising, Marketing and Branding only.
In the west, MVNO is a very popular business model. Hopefully we will have some Virgin Mobiles in India :-) |

| BSNL thinking Global. |
|
Globalization bug has bitten the Indian telcos. After Reliance Communications Ltd and Bharti Airtel Ltd joining the ranks of Emerging Telecom Giants of Asia, it's now time for the state owned BSNL. Over the past decade, BSNL has transformed itself from being a lethargic PSU into a aggressively managed and highly competent Telecom company in India.
BSNL is seeking management control of Nigerian Telecommunications Limited. It is also in talks with Saudi Arabian Telco to start mobile services in oil rich gulf nation. Earlier Reliance communications owned Flag Telecom connected Saudi with FALCON and also started RiTV in the gulf.
