Aircel is now copying Bharti's Business Model

Sunil Mittal was the first dare devil CEO of the telecom sector in the world to outsource Network and Infrastructure management to companies such as IBM/Nokia etc. Soon the copy machines were in force - Hutch, Idea and now Aircel is copying the same business model.

Aircel, subsidiary of Maxis Telecom, Malaysian company is outsourcing its network infrastructure and management operations to Nokia Siemens. The deal is worth Rs 300 crore and is for the Kolkatta GSM circle. Nokia Siemens will lay and maintain the 3G GSM network. They will also make the network ready for 3G and Wimax services. Aircel plans to be a PAN India cellular operator and already has licenses but no spectrum :-) It also has licenses for ILD and NLD.

TRAI wants operators to declare SMS charging days

Telecom Operators like Spice Telecom and Reliance Mobile quietly started charging full charges on SMSs sent during festivals. This inflated the bills of ignorant consumers. TRAI spotted this anomaly and has issued a notification to Mobile service providers. TRAI has asked,
  • The black out days i.e. the days on which free/concessional SMS are not available shall be clearly indicated in the package itself.
  • The SMS charges applicable on these special days shall be explicitly conveyed to the subscribers.
  • The dates corresponding to the black out day shall not be altered after the pack is subscribed by the customer.
  • There shall be no addition to the list of black out days after the pack is subscribed by the customer.
I really doubt if Mobile service providers will convey this message to its consumers. So if you are a reader of this blog, you can call your operator and ask them for the dates, especially if your address book has more than 250 entries.

DoT in a fix over Reliance Pan India GSM

The DoT is in a fix on use of mixed technologies [GSM & CDMA] by private operators on PAN India basis. Reliance which already has a PAN India footprint in CDMA wants to provide GSM services as well. Reliance GSM and CDMA services both operate under separate cost centers and are competing against each other.

The GSM spectrum is one of the most sought after resource. For instance, in Karantaka the high growth cellular circle, operator like Airtel is already packing more than 4 lakh users / MHz of spectrum against the DoT standard of 1.7 Lakh / MHz.

DoT wants directives from TRAI on Reliance GSM issue.

DoT wants Monopoly in Intra-State Long Distance

Mobile, then The DoT wants to retain its monopoly in Intra-State Long Distance calls using BSNL network. For instance you want to make a call from Mangalore to Bangalore/Bengalooru using your Airtel Mobile. Airtel has to hand over the traffic to BSNL @ Mangalore to carry it to Bangalore. BSNL charges double the fees than what is prevailing in the market. BSNL charges 20Ps / Minute while Private Operators are willing to carry the traffic at less than 10 Ps / Minute.

Private Telecom Operators have registered their objections to end this monopoly because an amendment has already been passed but DoT is unwilling to implement the same. private Operators like Reliance Communications which is seeing a substantial fall in ARPU is desperate to end this mess. DoT or Government must only regulate and let the market discover the pricing.
